I have been thinking a lot about the future of education, and some of you would have seen my first blog on this. I have been struggling with how online schooling could work for homeschoolers where we don’t want too much structure and definitely no exams or assessments. So how about this for an idea… an online homeschooling club…?
There could be a parents section and a kids section. In the parents section we could share resources, blog links, have a support network when they feel like tearing their hair out (which seems like a pretty regular occurrence with homeschooling).
In the kid’s section, they could create and manage groups of interest. Like an art group, a science group (or perhaps one aspect of science like space ), maths, google earth, computer programming, computer games etc etc etc. In these groups they could organise to do projects together, communciate with like-minded kids around the world, share resources and more….? We could even have parents with particular expertise volunteering to run an activity – like an art history class, or a lesson on the solar system. They would not have to be divided by age or have too many rules… it would just be a way of networking and learning. It could even be good for kids who go to school.
I have a bit of experience with Moodle and I think it could be a great learning management system (LMS) for this kind of project – and it is free! There are also some great online virtual meeting programs where they could see each other and chat live. This could be a good way of presenting projects…
I know my kids would love something like this (as long as it wasn’t too formalised). What about yours?
